Acne is a skin disorder that can have a large impact on one's self esteem. Acne is a hormonal and inflammatory based and ranges from mild, moderate, and severe. Acne then is broken down into inflammatory vs. non-inflammatory acne. Most teenagers will "out grow" their acne. One of the largest question I get from females is "Why am I now developing acne, I made it all through High School with clear skin?" The answer is not fair/ nor clear why, but it is common for females to obtain hormonal acne in their 20's and 30's. IT is best to see a skin professional to make sure you are treating lesions currently to reduce the risk of life long scaring and pigmentary changes.
My largest over the counter recommendations:
Benzoyl Peroxide Wash- caution this may bleach clothing
Most important is moisturizer - it is a large misconceptions that having oily skin, moisturizer will make acne worse. This is a false statement that has been passed down throughout the years. The more you moisturize your own skin, the less oil it will produce
Here are some of my favorite brands to help with acne:
CeraVe
La Roche Posay
Olay
Cetaphil
Retinoids: There are a lot of products that contain a retinol, please use with caution due to irritation that can occur from over use.
I love treating acne and bringing patient's confidence back!
